Why We Shouldn’t Forget Conventional Training Methods

Traditional lifts are often traditional for a reason.

I’ve written a lot here in the last few weeks about unconventional training methods. I’ve had a love affair with them before, but I got in my head that what I needed was pure, raw strength, so I turned to the barbell for that.

Now, fate has returned me to the loving embrace of things like kettlebells and sledgehammers (which is now my new band name).

But I’ve also come to realize something very important, and that’s how we probably shouldn’t turn our backs on conventional training methods.

Onward

As noted yesterday, I figured a couple of things out about my training and I needed to start figuring out a few more things.

What follows is my attempt to prioritize my goals and adjust my training accordingly. Warning: This post may include some rambling as this is literally me trying to figure some stuff out, but what the hell, right?

The thing is, by the end, I should have a plan for tomorrow and for moving forward.

All The Difference

I wasn’t planning on blogging today, but I got my workout in and something happened that I kind of feel obligated to write about. Especially since it ties into the conundrum of the week. In other words, motivation.

You see, I went out to lift kind of late for a number of reasons, but still wasn’t really feeling particularly enthused about lifting. I knew I needed to, which is why I went to train, but…

I didn’t really want to do everything. I decided to do just two things. I wanted to bench since it was my bench day, and I wanted to do some farmer’s walks. They’re probably my favorite exercise and I haven’t really gotten a chance to do them this week.

But I also decided to do something very different.

Thursday Thoughts: There Is No ‘One True Way’

Anywhere you go on the internet, you’re bound to come across people who will tell you that there is One True Way to whatever your goals are, that you have to follow their routine precisely or else you might as well just pull into McDonald’s and gorge yourself.

The thing is, I’m someone who delves into things deeply when I get interested in them. I become something of a sponge, absorbing all the information I can find. With fitness, it’s been no different.

Over time, things change, and so even if I forgo fitness for a while, I still come back and delve in deep. I need to see what’s changed, what new information has science provided.

Because of that, I’ve learned one really great lesson about health and fitness: There is no One True Way.
