The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

We are an affluent society, but that affluence has created certain problems. Namely, much of society is no longer forced to work on farms or in manual labor positions, which makes society much more sedentary than in ages past. This has led to many people gaining weight and other associated health problems that come with living a less vigorous lifestyle.

Now, reading the above, it’s not difficult to determine that I’m talking about this day and age. After all, all of that applies. We now have a society where two-thirds of the American population are classified as overweight or obese. This is a direct result of so much of our lives revolving around not having to exert ourselves.

Yet I wasn’t thinking of today when I wrote that blockquote.

Instead, I was paraphrasing a bygone era. I was actually thinking about the Victoria era, the age of people like Louis Cyr and Eugen Sandow. I was channeling and rephrasing comments made from the golden age of physical culture.

Fat Acceptance And The Future Of Humanity

Are we doomed to be the humans in Wall-E, or is there a choice?

I get where the fat acceptance movement gets it’s motivation from. It annoys me, particularly as a former fat guy, but I get it. There are people who want to treat those who are overweight as subhuman filth. They’re mean, cruel people.

But the problem is that fat acceptance isn’t really the answer to this issue. Instead, it’s going to take us places that we, as a society, shouldn’t want to go.

When ‘Unhealthy’ Is Mainstream, Become Countercultural

I remember spending hours and hours sitting around the house, talking to my mother about the Sixties. I was born in 1973, so I obviously missed all of that, but Mom was there.

Deep in her heart, she wanted to be a hippy. She hated the Vietnam War and loved the music, but she was just a bit old for that culture. Plus, she was married to a man enlisted in the Navy, which might have played a factor.

Anyway, she would talk about the countercultural movement of that era with a certain reverence.

My father is still a dedicated smart-ass who was known for doing things others were afraid to do. Yes, that includes running into burning buildings despite his asthma.

I appear to be a combination of my parents, but I didn’t realize just how much of one I was until this morning. You see, I’ve become countercultural in ways I never expected.

Do Diets Really Work?

I think I’m pretty open with the fact that I don’t like the “fat acceptance” movement. In my opinion, it’s going to get people killed in the long run, but they don’t care about that.

However, I’m actually OK with people who simply want to be fat. They have a right to live whatever lifestyle they want, whether I personally approve or not, and they also have a right to be treated as a worthwhile human being regardless of whether they’re thin or fat.

What I’m not OK with is when fat acceptance people just make up crap.

Recently, over at Vice, a post dropped of “51 Ways to Make the World Less Hostile to Fat People.” In it, the author makes a lot of comments that need to be slapped down, but debunking BS takes an order of magnitude more work than writing said BS in the first place, so I’m going to start with just one particular tidbit. How ‘Fat Acceptance’ Movement Will Destroy America

Once upon a time, it was important that disadvantaged groups raised awareness on how they were being treated. There were gays being attacked simply for being gay. Minorities were attacked just because they were minorities. It wasn’t a good thing.

Even when actual violence wasn’t a result, though, they were still mistreated from time to time, and so they fought back to change the culture so that crap wasn’t acceptable.

Today, it isn’t. That’s a good thing.

However, today there’s a group that claims to be fighting for the something similar. Unfortunately, in this case, it will lead to the downfall of America.

That group is the crusaders of “fat acceptance.” Continue reading “How ‘Fat Acceptance’ Movement Will Destroy America”
